Commissioning Process Certifications, UW-Madison

Department of Engineering Professional Development

The University of Wisconsin—Madison, Department of Engineering Professional Development offers individuals the opportunity to gain a marketable, independently recognized certification as a professional knowledgeable in the commissioning process. Three unique certifications offer applicants recognition for their skills, through a combination of training, examination, and proof of professional experience. The certifications include:

  • CxAPSM – Accredited Commissioning Process Authority Professional (also CAPSM). Acknowledges applicants who have served as the primary commissioning authority during all project stages (pre-design through occupancy) on a minimum number and size of projects.
  • CXMSM – Accredited Commissioning Process Manager: Distinguishes applicants who have managed commissioning process activities within their organizations, such as university or government in-house programs.
  • CxTSSM – Accredited Commissioning Process Technical Support Provider (also CTSSM): Highlights the skill and experience of applicants who have provided commissioning services primarily in select project stages, on small or limited scope projects, or who provide key technical support to commissioning activities.

Applicants who do not yet have sufficient professional experience in the commissioning process to qualify for one of the above certifications will receive accreditation as a Qualified Commissioning Process Provider, or QCxPSM (also QCPSM), upon successful completion of the training and examination. The QCxPSM is valid for up to five years to allow the applicant time to acquire the necessary experience for the CxAPSM, CXMSM, or CxTSSM. All certifications require that the applicant:

  • Complete five days of University of Wisconsin—Madison commissioning process courses or provide proof of equivalent five-day course. Combinations of 3-day/2-day courses may be taken at separate offerings.
  • Successfully complete the examination. The five-days of course work must be completed prior to taking the exam.
  • Submit complete application forms, with supporting requirements, as required by each specific certification. No applications will be accepted until the applicant has passed the examination.
  • Be approved for certification by the Commissioning Process Certification Committee at the University of Wisconsin.
